What are the different parts of Indian Temples?

It was a gradual progression from rock-cut- cave temples to monolithic rathas, which culminated in structural temples. The following are the basic components of a Hindu structural temple. 

  • Garbhagriha: It literally means “womb-house,” and it is a cave similar to the main temple.

  • Mandapa: It is the temple’s entrance.

  • Shikhara or Vimana: They resemble the spire of a free-standing temple. Shikhara can be found in North Indian temples, whereas Vimana can be found in South Indian temples.

  • Amalaka: It is a stone disc-like structure at the temple’s apex that is common in North Indian temples.

  •  Kalasha: It is the temple’s highest point and is commonly found in North Indian temples.

  • Antarala (vestibule): Antarala is a transition area between the Garbhagriha and the main hall of the temple (mandapa).

  • Jagati: It is a raised platform used in North Indian temples for sitting and praying.

  • Vahana: It is the main deity’s mount or vehicle, along with a standard pillar or Dhvaj placed axially before the sanctum.
